In Memory of Tom Benner

(1950-2022)

We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of respected London artist Tom Benner.

Upon graduation from H. B. Beal Secondary School, he immediately began an art practice spanning over five decades in painting, sculpture, printmaking and installation. He mounted numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada, the United States and internationally on nature, the environment, and Indigenous histories.

McIntosh Gallery enjoyed a long association with Tom in various projects including the ambitious exhibition, Cruising the Margins. Its three life-size handcrafted vehicles based on the Pontiac, Jeep Cherokee, and Chev Apache centred on the exploitation of Indigenous heroes to market American automobiles. It toured across North America from 2002 to 2004 and was featured at the Canadian International Auto Show. The McIntosh’s holdings of Tom’s artworks include paintings, drawings, prints, and the large sculpture Stone Columns located in the Gallery’s sculpture garden.

Our sincere condolences to his wife, Pauline, and family.
